Rural Health Clinic Expands Telehealth Access Across Roanoke Area

A community health clinic serving the Roanoke region announced an expansion of its telehealth program this week, aiming to close gaps in specialist access for patients in outlying areas.

The access problem

Clinic leadership say many patients in the surrounding area face long drives to reach specialists in cardiology, endocrinology, and behavioral health, often leading them to delay or skip care altogether.

"We kept losing patients to distance, not to lack of need," the clinic's medical director said. "Telehealth doesn't solve everything, but it solves that specific problem for a lot of people."

How the program works

Under the expanded program, patients can now access virtual specialist consultations directly from the clinic, with on-site staff available to help with technology and follow-up care coordination. The clinic has also added remote monitoring devices for patients managing chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension.

Early results

In a pilot phase run over the past year, clinic staff say no-show rates for specialist follow-ups dropped meaningfully once telehealth options were introduced, and patients reported high satisfaction with the convenience.

"I used to have to take a full day off work for one appointment," one longtime patient said. "Now I can do it on my lunch break."

Funding and future plans

The expansion was supported by a combination of state rural health grants and philanthropic funding. Clinic administrators say they hope to add additional specialty lines to the telehealth program over the next year, pending continued funding.
