Carilion Clinic celebrated the opening of an expanded emergency department in Charlottesville this week, part of a broader investment aimed at easing wait times and adding capacity for the growing population it serves.

Why the expansion was needed

Hospital administrators say emergency visits at the facility have climbed steadily over the past several years, driven in part by regional population growth and an aging patient base.

"We were seeing wait times creep up in a way that wasn't fair to patients or sustainable for our staff," the hospital's chief medical officer said. "This expansion gives us the physical space to match the demand we're actually seeing."

What's new

The expanded department adds dozens of new treatment bays, a dedicated fast-track area for lower-acuity cases, and an upgraded triage system designed to route patients to the right level of care more quickly. A new behavioral health intake area is also included, reflecting a rise in mental health-related emergency visits.

Staffing alongside the expansion

The hospital says it has also hired additional emergency physicians, nurses, and technicians to staff the larger footprint, addressing concerns that new space alone would not solve wait time issues.

"A bigger department only helps if you have the people to run it," a senior nursing director said. "We made sure staffing kept pace with the construction timeline."
