Credit unions serving the Roanoke area report notable membership growth over the past year, a trend industry representatives attribute to competitive rates and a renewed interest in member-owned financial institutions.
The numbers
Several regional credit unions say new membership applications have grown at a faster pace than in recent years, with much of the growth coming from younger members opening their first accounts.
"A lot of people are realizing credit unions aren't just for one type of member anymore," a credit union CEO said. "We're seeing young professionals, families, retirees — a much broader mix than a decade ago."
What's driving the shift
Credit union officials point to competitive interest rates on savings accounts and lower fees compared to some traditional banks as key factors drawing new members, along with a broader trend of consumers prioritizing local, member-owned institutions.
Member experiences
New members cite personalized service as a major draw, describing interactions that feel different from larger national banks.
"I called with a question and actually got a person who knew my account by name," one new member said. "That doesn't happen at the big banks anymore."
Challenges ahead
Despite the growth, credit union leaders acknowledge they face pressure to keep pace with the digital banking tools offered by larger competitors.
What's next
Several credit unions in the region say they plan to invest in expanded digital banking features over the coming year to retain new members drawn in by rates and service alike.
