Local School District in Fairfax Expands Career and Technical Education Programs

The Fairfax public school system announced an expansion of its career and technical education (CTE) programs, adding several new pathways for high school students beginning next academic year.

New pathways

The expansion adds tracks in healthcare foundations, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity fundamentals, and skilled trades such as HVAC and electrical work. District officials say the additions reflect direct input from local employers who have struggled to fill entry-level technical roles.

"We're not designing these programs in a vacuum," said a district CTE coordinator. "Every new pathway we add starts with a conversation with the businesses that would eventually hire these students."

Student outcomes

District data shows that students who complete CTE pathways in the district have historically graduated at higher rates than the district average, and many go on to earn industry certifications before finishing high school.

Investment and partnerships

The expansion is backed by a mix of state grant funding and partnerships with regional community colleges, which will allow qualifying students to earn dual enrollment credit alongside their CTE coursework.

Parents and students attending an informational session this week said the appeal of the new tracks is the direct line to employment they offer.

"My daughter isn't sure she wants a four-year degree right away, and this gives her a real option that doesn't feel like a consolation prize," one parent said.

District officials say they will evaluate enrollment numbers at the end of the first semester before deciding whether to add additional pathways in future years.
